Alcatraz Island

Take a step back into history when you visit Alcatraz Island, also known as “The Rock.” Through the years, the island has been home to the first lighthouse and US-built fort on the West Coast and one of the infamous federal prison in history – Alcatraz. Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary was considered inescapable, as no prisoner successfully escaped during its 29 years of operation. The prison held some of the most notorious criminals in American history, such as Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly, and Mickey Cohen. Due to high operations cost, the prison closed in 1963. A few years later, the island was inhabited by a group of Native Americans and college students who protested federal policies and treatments of American Indians.

You can learn all about the storied history of Alcatraz Island with an exciting day trip. To get to “The Rock,” you just have to hop on a ferry, which docks 3 miles from our hotel. Ticket prices range from $18 to $30, and include ferry transportation, entrance, and an audio tour. Book at least a month ahead, as this attraction is one of the most popular in the city. Learn More
